Dear Glenwood Family,
I hope that each of you had a wonderful weekend! Friday, Jan. 20th was the end of the second quarter. Report cards were sent home Friday, January 27th in the Gator Communicator. Portfolio items for the second quarter also went home at this time. Please take time to review your child's work, celebrate their accomplishments and set goals for the third quarter. Return the report card envelope (signed) and portfolio items when finished reviewing.
UNC athletes began coming to our class a few Mondays ago. Different sports teams from Carolina will come weekly to share literature and learning experiences of humanitarians and characteristics of responsible citizens.
Also, two volunteers from Junior Achievement will come into our class on Tuesdays for 5 consecutive weeks. This program will integrate social studies concepts and elements of a community.
Students received information regarding the Humanitarian Project. This is a fun project in which students research a humanitarian, develop a report, and dress up like the person to share their learning with others.
I have set up three different blogs on this website. The most recent one involves discussion of the character trait: beauty. We will investigate this character trait throughout the second quarter. I'm thrilled to see the many comments and contributions of ideas students are sharing! I encourage students to take advantage of this interactive, extra-credit opportunity!
The back to school letter:
I would like to welcome you to one of the most incredible years your child will have in his/her school career! Third grade is an exciting time as children embark upon new adventures in the world of learning.
My name is Candace White, and I am delighted to be returning to the Glenwood community this year! I spent the first six years of my career teaching both third and fourth grades in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. I hold a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I am thrilled to begin my ninth year as an educator and I am anticipating an action-packed year of new experiences!
I hope to make your child's year an extraordinary one. I know I will instill a love of learning that will last throughout your child's years of schooling. Here are some ways you can help:
- Celebrate your child's successes, no matter how small it may seem. This will keep your child enthusiastic about learning and proud of their accomplishments!
- Check my website on a weekly basis. The website is linked to the Glenwood Elementary School home page. This site contains announcements, a calendar with upcoming events, classroom activities, homework, and useful links.
- Check your child's Communication Folder daily. This folder will contain their homework assignments. It will also provide a mean of communication between home and school.
- Read to and with your child every day. Ask a variety of questions to extend concepts and comprehension. The more your child is exposed to language, the easier it will be for him/her to incorporate new skills in reading and writing in the classroom.
- Practice basic multiplication facts. If your child masters these, try basic division facts! Flashcards work well and there are also plenty of interactive sites on the Internet if you have access.
- Parent involvement is a major key to success for our students, so I encourage you to please consider volunteering at our school and/or in the classroom.
I look forward to seeing each of you at our Open House on September 15th from 6:00-8:00 p.m.!
Please feel free to contact me at school (919-968-3473 ext. 38230) or via E-mail (cwhite@chccs.k12.nc.us) if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. More information regarding this upcoming school year will be sent home shortly. I am looking forward to a terrific year ahead!
Sincerely,
Candace White
