All rising 7th and interested 8th grade athletes and parents are invited to a Sports Information Meeting on Tuesday, May 15, at 6:30 in the Smith Auditorium. This session is designed to answer any questions you may have regarding participation in the Smith Middle School Athletic Program. If you are new to middle school school sports you will find this meeting valuable.

Smith Middle School Named Middle School of the Year

The North Carolina Association for Scholastic Activities is proud to announce Smith Middle School of Chapel Hill as the winner of the NCASA Middle School of the Year (MSOY) award. Smith Middle School earned this award with their outstanding performance in three of the four MSOY Partner competitions. They finished second in the state in Science Olympiad, fourth in MATHCOUNTS, and two top-ten finishes in Odyssey of the Mind events. This earned Smith Middle School 104 points, 20 points ahead of second place Fred J. Carnage GT Magnet Middle School of Raleigh.

Schools earned MSOY points by participation and excellence in the four major middle school scholastic competitions in North Carolina: Science Olympiad, Odyssey of the Mind, Envirothon, and MATHCOUNTS. Five points were earned for participation, and as many as 50 points for a top ten finish in the State Final. Here are the point totals for the top ten schools.

These ten schools will be recognized during the NCASA Annual Meeting hosted by NCSSM on June 26. All educators are encouraged to attend.

NCASA membership is open to all North Carolina middle and high schools.

Smith Playmakers presents Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

You are invited to see Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (adapted by Tim Kelly), presented by the Smith Theatre Arts Playmakers on Friday and Saturday, April 27th and 28th at 7:00 PM in the Smith Middle School Auditorium.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children (13 and under).

Faculty vs. Students Softball Game

On Tuesday March 20th the Smith Middle School softball team took on a team of Smith staff members in a friendly four-inning fast pitch softball game. The game was the brain child of Smith softball coach and ECHS ESL teacher Greg Cain. Coach Cain noticed that his team had a week with no games due to some scheduling oddities. In an effort to get some more game experience he challenged Smith Principal Phil Holmes to field a team of staff members.

The game was a lot of fun for all involved. No official score was kept and estimates of the final score vary widely depending on who you ask. Most observers however would agree that the staff team won a close and hard fought game.

The student team was led by the fireballing pitching of Claire L. and Gabriel C.. Claire started the game by blowing three strikes past Principal Holmes (the first of two strike-outs for Holmes) and continued and with three impressive innings. Gabe finished the fourth with similarly dominating speed and precision.

Staff performances were led by Amanda Lumsden and Boyd Blackburn. Lumsden, a third grade teacher at Ephesus, agreed to pitch for the staff side and pitched four quality innings. Blackburn, a math teacher at Smith, brought the crowd to its feet with a third inning homerun that cleared the heads of the outfielders but not the outfield fences. In all 15 staff members participated in the game and all played hard and with great spirit.

Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the girls and the staff.

5K for Fitness

The Public School Foundation and Fleet Feet, Inc are pleased to announce a change to Race for Education. Saturday, April 28th will be the first 5K for Fitness at McCorkle Place/Franklin Street/UNC Campus. There will be a 5k run/walk, Fitness Fair, and Mascot Dash. Smith's MathCounts Team

On Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Athens Drive HS in Raleigh, the Smith Middle School MathCounts Team won their MathCounts Chapter Competition coming in 1st out of 28 teams. Carnage MS and Ligon MS of Wake Co. came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. MathCounts is the most prestigious national middle school math competition.

Smith has consistently fielded strong teams in the past (Top 10 in the State for six of the past seven years) but this was the first time they had won their Chapter Competition.

Smith was led by 6th-grader Stas K. with a near perfect score of 45 (a perfect score is 46) that earned him 2nd place among all individuals. Other very high scores for Smith included Veronica K. and Matthew D. with 43, Jennifer Z. and Andrew Z. with 42, and Sarah W. and Vijay D. with 41. Seven of the top 16 students were from Smith, including four 6th graders. Vijay was also the champion of the Countdown Round. The team is coached by Boyd Blackburn with help from Jaclyn Arnson.

The win qualified the Smith Team for the State Finals to be held at the NC School of Science and Math in Durham on March 16th.

This year Smith had over 70 students participate in the MathCounts program which is run as an after-school club meeting once per week starting in the Fall.

Back in November, Smith had also done very well in the AMC8 Math Competition, tying Carnage MS for first place in the state. Details on that accomplishment are available on request.

The Booster Club and PTSA will host the Cyclone Games on Tuesday, Feb. 7 from 3:30pm-5:30pm in the gym. Admission is FREE . but bring money to enter the raffle; tickets are $2. All proceeds benefit the PTA Thriftstore Building Campaign. Amazing prizes include Kindle Touch, YMCA 6-month membership, $50 TCBY gift card, and many others. Order forms went home in report card folder and can be turned into your homeroom teacher. Purchase raffle tickets by using the order forms sent home in report card folders; they can be turned in to your homeroom teacher. Or purchase raffle tickets at the Cyclone Games.

All Smith students are invited to participate, and families are invited to watch the fun. The Cyclone Games is a STUDENTS vs TEACHERS series of made-up games such as Scooter Basketball, Oversized Volleyball, and Football Frenzy. This year we have a [new] dance competition for Smith teachers and faculty. Come out and watch their freestyle!

New Delayed Opening Schedule

In an effort to balance out the length of academic periods and maintain the integrity of the daily schedule we have decided to run delayed openings on a new schedule. The schedule is listed below. All periods will now be 31 minutes long on delayed opening days and classes will be in the same order as on any other day. We will use this schedule for all two hour delayed opening days for the remainder of the year.

On Saturday, dozens of Smith students, parents, and teachers participated in the 15th Annual Walk for Education. Students from Smith carried flags from all over the world to represent the diversity at our school. We raised over $8,000 which will go toward a new netbook lab and other instructional supplies to support classroom teachers. Thanks to our teachers--Kelly Sears, Channing Bennett, Danielle Parker, Ashley Hounshell, Sally Merryman, Robin McMahon, Rebekah Cole, and Greta Moseley for setting up booths to raise funds for various programs at our school. Shout outs to Noa Stuchiner and Robin McMahon for leading the Smith parade.

Our Booster Club held its Car Wash at Smith on Saturday morning. Thanks to the hard work of parents, students, and coaches, the car wash raised over $1000 that will go towards supporting athletic programs at Smith. Thanks to all who participated!

Lacrosse Alumni Game

Students who have an interest in playing on the Smith Boys Lacrosse team in the spring are invited to watch the UNC Lacrosse Alumni game together this Friday, Sept. 30. The game starts at 7pm. Interested students should meet at Smith Middle School parking lot (near the cafeteria) at 6:15pm to carpool over to Navy Field. The game is free.

Wed. 8/17, 3pm-4pm - Orientation for newly registered students
This orientation meeting is for any students who are new to Smith and did not have a chance to attend one of our orientation events this past spring.

Monday 8/22, 5-6pm - Meet the Teacher Night
Team and homeroom lists will be posted throughout the school and teachers will be present to meet students and families.

Monday 8/22 6-7pm - Athletics Information Meeting
This meeting is for parents of seventh and eighth grade students who are interested in participating on one or more of our athletic teams.

Thursday 8/25 - First Day of School
We will run an extended homeroom period that day. Students will receive their schedules and other important information at that time.
