Bridging the Digital Divide

The Internet has changed the face of education. Many students now have 24/7 access to immense information resources unimaginable mere decades ago. Still, there are students in our district who constantly struggle to keep up with those who live in the connected world.

The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools firmly believes that all students should have safe and convenient access to the transformative power of computer and internet access. During the past few years, our district has developed several support services to help students and their families bridge the digital divide. Community Connection is the operational program that oversees these services.

What We Do

Provide a Helping Hand
We assist district families to overcome connectivity challenges by providing computers and internet access, technical support and training, and information about the many connection options available.

Support Computer Labs in Public Housing Communities
We partnered with Time Warner Cable to set up computer labs and bring high speed Internet access to Family Resource Centers located in the town's public housing communities. Learn more

Provide Free In-Home Computers
We partnered with the Kramden Institute Inc. in Durham, N.C. to provide deserving CHCCS students with free computers. Learn more

Implement Computer Labs in Disadvantaged Apartment Communities
We partnered General Services Corporation and The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Human Rights Center to set up computer labs in low income apartment communities. Learn more

Volunteer Services
We partnered UNC Apples Program and community residents to provide volunteer services at computer labs and computer giveaway events.

Form Partnerships with Internet Service Providers
We work with ISPs to negotiate special pricing for internet access to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school community. Learn more

Provide Information on Community Access Locations
We maintain a list of the availability of computer centers in the community to ensure that the computers are configured to link back to student resources within the district. Learn more
