Our Mission : To engage our community in the education of youth to enrich the lives of both.

Volunteering is a passage to life-long growth. Volunteering provides the opportunity to learn a skill, enter another culture, gain job experience, and reap the rewards of working toward a meaningful goal, thus enriching the human experience as few other activities do. Research tells us that people who begin volunteering in their youth realize greater professional success, and those who continue to volunteer into their senior years live happier and healthier lives.

However, most of us do not choose to volunteer because of what volunteering does for us. Rather, we choose to volunteer to make a difference in something that is important to us. For many folks, that means volunteering in our nation's classrooms, because we know that a good education is the key to self-fulfillment and financial independence.

When you volunteer in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, you can be assured of making a difference. We work closely with our teachers and school administrators to define roles for volunteers that support classroom instruction. Our nationally recognized volunteer training programs provide you with the skills you need to be effective in your role. Because of the training we provide, you will know that as you tutor, you are helping children to become more successful in the classroom, and ultimately in life.

Teachers view volunteers as powerful partners. Each semester, over 1,000 UNC students, senior citizens, and community members volunteer in our schools along with countless numbers of parents. Since the Volunteer Office was created in 1993, thousands of individuals have attended training and touched the lives of innumerable students. The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools are among the best in the nation, in part, because of the strong force of volunteers who work in our schools daily.
