Enrollment

To be eligible to apply:

  • As of the 2008-2009 school year, a child must be at least 3 years old by August 31st
  • Reside in the Chapel-Hill Carrboro City School District
  • Students may be enrolled in CHCCS Pre-K/Head Start classes by qualifying for either Head Start, NC Pre-K, Exceptional Education Services, or Tuition placement. All students are placed in blended classrooms.

To qualify for:

Head Start: Placement as a Head Start eligible child is based upon family income. If the family income is equal to or below the federal income guideline, the family would be eligible for a fully subsidized Pre-K slot for their child. The instructional day runs from 8 am to 2:30 pm. Parents who are working or attending school may have the option for extended care from 7:30-8:00 am and 2:30-5:30 pm.

NC Pre-K (formerly More at Four): NC Pre-K placement is based on the state NC Pre-K criteria including family income, language proficiency, parent education, housing, parent employment, special education, etc. This program is available from 8:00am-2:30 pm. There would be a $300 fee for extended care (2:30-5:30 pm).

Exceptional Education: Placement is based on identified special service needs of the child. This program is available from 7:30am-2:30pm.  If extended care is needed, (2:30-5:30), there is a charge of $300.00 per month.  For questions about special services placement, please contact Thea Wilson at 918-2156 ext. 23104.

Tuition: Currently, Tuition is $925 per month for full day care from 7:30-5:30. This is not based on a sliding scale. 

Tuition and extended day care tuition assistance: Tuition assistance may be available, if eligible, through Childcare Services Association (967-3272) and the Department of Social Services (968-2000).

Dual Language program: currently, two pre-k classes at Carrboro Elementary are taught in English and Spanish, with students spending time with each teacher. This program is very popular. For more information see link: http://www2.chccs.k12.nc.us/education/dept/dept.php?sectionid=2978/

 

Enrollment is continuous throughout the school year.

To enroll a child in the Pre-K/Head Start program, all of the following information must be provided to the Pre-K/Head Start office:

Proof of Parent's Income
Verification can include W-2 forms, pay check stubs, college scholarship or grant information, or a letter from a caseworker stating income. Verification from other income such as unemployment benefits, social security, or child support.

  • Certified Copy of Birth Certificate (or passport, I-94)
  • Health Insurance Card, private or Medicaid
  • Child's Social Security Card
  • Proof of residency in school district

The following must he provided by your child's 30th day in class:

Immunization Record and physical exam:

  • 4 DPT/DT
  • 3 OPV
  • 1 MMR
  • 4 HIB
  • 3 Hepatitis B
  • Hep A
  • 1 Varicella
  • 4 PCV7
  • Child's Physical Exam (include Tb results, height, weight, blood pressure, lead screen [medicaid patients] and physical assessment)

The next steps:

After the Pre-K/Head Start family services departments receives the above information, the application will be screened for eligibility by the Screening Committee. You will be notified of your child's placement status by mail.
