Best Practice(s) Modeled:
Using Appleworks Database to explore properties of rocks, the Internet to research a particular rock or mineral, and Microsoft Powerpoint to present information to the class.

Description of lesson/unit: Grade level teachers were responsible for teaching the rocks and minerals curriculum. Sudents particpated in classroom activities as well as experiments in the science lab related to rocks and minerals. The database program in Appleworks was used to query a rocks/minerals database to discover like and unlike properties between a variety of rocks/minerals.

Students also utilized print and internet resources to further their knowledge on one particular rock or mineral.

Using Microsoft Powerpoint, students created and shared a slide show describing a rock/mineral's properties, uses, and where it is found.

Linked Documents: Included in the linked documents section is the Rocks database and a differentiated student sheet that pairs or groups used to query each database. Also provided is a sample powerpoint presentation on Pumice used as an example and rubric for students. Finally, a note-taking guide and several student powerpoint projects are provided as well.

Standard Course of Study Objective(s) Met:
Competency Goal 4:
The learner will understand and use graphs, probability, and data analysis.

Objectives
4.01 Collect, organize, analyze, and display data (including line graphs and bar graphs to solve problems.
4.02 Describe the distribution of data using median, range and mode.
4.03 Solve problems by comparing two sets of related data.
4.04 Design experiments and list all possible outcomes and probabilities for an event.

Competency Goal 2: The learner will conduct investigations and use appropriate technology to build an understanding of the composition and uses of rocks and minerals.

Objectives
2.01 Describe and evaluate the properties of several minerals.
2.02 Recognize that minerals have a definite chemical composition and structure, resulting in specific physical properties including:
Hardness.
Streak color.
Luster.
Magnetism.
2.03 Explain how rocks are composed of minerals.
2.04 Show that different rocks have different properties.
2.05 Discuss and communicate the uses of rocks and minerals.
2.06 Classify rocks and rock-forming minerals using student-made rules.
2.07 Identify and discuss different rocks and minerals in North Carolina including their role in geologic formations and distinguishing geologic regions.

Technology Objective(s) Met:
Competency Goal 2: The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of computer and other technologies.

Objectives:
2.01 Sort and search/filter a prepared content area database for information and use correct terms/concepts to explain strategies used as a class activity.
2.02 Plan and use two criteria to search/filter prepared databases to locate and organize information for content assignments.
2.11 Recognize, discuss, and use rubrics to evaluate elements (e.g., content, organization, appropriateness of materials, citations) of multimedia projects/products.

Competency Goal 3: The learner will use a variety of technologies to access, analyze, interpret, synthesize, apply, and communicate information.

Objectives:
3.02. Use databases to analyze and evaluate information in content areas and cite sources.
3.03 Discuss, plan, and develop simple databases in content area to enter/edit, collect, organize, and display content data as a class.
3.04 Enter data into prepared spreadsheets and select graph to best represent data and cite sources of data.
