School: Ephesus Elementary Grade: 4th Grade Content Area: Math & Science Best Practice(s) Modeled: Using Appleworks Database to explore properties of rocks, the Internet to research a particular rock or mineral, and Microsoft Powerpoint to present information to the class. Description of lesson/unit: Grade level teachers were responsible for teaching the rocks and minerals curriculum. Sudents particpated in classroom activities as well as experiments in the science lab related to rocks and minerals. The database program in Appleworks was used to query a rocks/minerals database to discover like and unlike properties between a variety of rocks/minerals. Students also utilized print and internet resources to further their knowledge on one particular rock or mineral. Using Microsoft Powerpoint, students created and shared a slide show describing a rock/mineral's properties, uses, and where it is found. Linked Documents: Included in the linked documents section is the Rocks database and a differentiated student sheet that pairs or groups used to query each database. Also provided is a sample powerpoint presentation on Pumice used as an example and rubric for students. Finally, a note-taking guide and several student powerpoint projects are provided as well. |
